Weligama is consistently ranked as the best place in the world to learn to surf. Not one of the best — the best. Here’s why.
The bay is wide, sheltered, and south-facing — it catches consistent swell from the Indian Ocean while the surrounding headlands strip out the power, leaving long, slow, forgiving waves that are ideal for beginners. The bottom is sand. The water is 28°C year-round. There are no rocks, no reef, and almost no current at the main learning areas.
Unlike other surf destinations where beginner and advanced surfers share the same break, Weligama’s bay naturally separates skill levels. Beginners learn on the wide, gentle inside section. More experienced surfers head to the faster, more powerful outside breaks. There is space for everyone and almost no risk of a nervous first-timer getting in the way of a more powerful wave.
For all of these reasons, Weligama has attracted surf schools from around the world — and produced thousands of first-time surfers who came to Sri Lanka with no ocean experience and left with a new obsession.
Unlike Arugam Bay on the east coast, Weligama runs year-round. The south coast’s surf season is driven by the northeast monsoon (November to April) — Sri Lanka’s winter — which delivers the most consistent, clean swells. This is peak season for Weligama.
Best months for beginners: November through March. Consistent 2–4ft swell, light winds, and excellent visibility. This is when conditions are most predictable and ideal for learning.
April and October: Transition months — still good for lessons, slightly variable conditions. Less crowded than peak season.
May to October: The south coast is affected by the southwest monsoon. Weligama still runs lessons year-round, but conditions can be more challenging during this window. If you’re visiting Sri Lanka May–October, consider our Arugam Bay lessons on the east coast where peak season aligns perfectly.
Every Surf & Stays instructor in Weligama is a certified local surfer who grew up in the water along this coastline. They know Weligama Bay the way most people know their own street — every sandbank, every current, every wave pattern at every tide.
Our instructors hold ISA (International Surfing Association) certification — the global standard for surf teaching. Certification is not just a piece of paper. It covers water safety, first aid, teaching methodology, and ocean risk assessment. Every student in our lessons is supervised by someone qualified to keep them safe.
We cap beginner groups at 6 students and intermediate groups at 4. This is not a commercial decision — it’s a coaching decision. More students per instructor means less attention per student, slower progress, and higher risk. We won’t compromise on this.
Weligama Bay (Main Beach): The primary learning area for all beginner lessons. Wide, sandy-bottom bay with consistent 2–4ft waves. Slow-peeling waves give beginners maximum time to pop up and find their balance. Safe, supervised, and suitable for all ages from 5 upwards.
Midigama (Intermediate and Above): 10 minutes east of Weligama by tuk-tuk. A reef break that produces hollow, faster waves ideal for intermediates and advanced surfers wanting a challenge. Not a beginner spot — we take intermediate lesson students here when conditions at the bay are too small.
Hiriketiya: A horseshoe-shaped bay 20 minutes east. A beautiful, sheltered beach break suitable for confident beginners and intermediates. Hiriketiya has become very popular in recent years — we use it for lessons when conditions are better than the main bay.
The fastest way to book is via WhatsApp — send us your preferred date, lesson type, and number of people and we confirm within minutes. Lessons run daily from 6:30am. Morning sessions (6:30–9am) are best — lightest winds, cleanest waves, fewest crowds.
Online booking is available on this page via our booking system. For groups of 4 or more, contact us directly for a group rate.

Surf and stay was the first hostel I stayed in when I arrived to Sri Lanka and one of the best I have stayed in during my 6 months travelling Asia! Since the first stay, I have gone back regularly to visit or stay again, Nishant and Danny were so welcoming and have gone above and beyond to help me out when I needed it. The hostel is close to the beach and has a very small, family feel which I loved. It’s very clean and affordable, Nishant is also an amazing cook and hosted some great family dinners😊 The surf instructors are also great and really helped me as a beginner surfer. They are patient and encouraging. Load moreVerified by TrustindexTrustindex verified badge is the Universal Symbol of Trust.
