Weligama Bay is one of the best beginner surf spots in the world — a wide, gently sloping beach break with a sandy bottom, warm Indian Ocean water, and consistent waves that are just the right size for learning. This 2-hour beginner lesson is designed to get you standing on a wave by the end of your very first session.
Your certified instructor starts on the beach with a short, practical theory session covering paddling, the pop-up, wave timing, and ocean safety. Then you’re in the water on a large, stable soft-top board — the safest and most forgiving equipment for first-timers. Your instructor stays with you throughout, selecting waves, correcting your technique in real time, and giving you the confidence to ride.
Groups are capped at 4 students so you get meaningful attention, not just a push and a wave goodbye. Weligama Bay is available year-round, making it one of the most accessible surf learning destinations on Sri Lanka’s southern coast. Most students are riding waves independently by the end of the session.
