Overview

2-hour beginner surf lesson in Weligama Bay. Stand up guaranteed. Soft-top board, leash and rash guard included. Max 4 students. Year-round availability.

Weligama Bay is one of the best beginner surf spots in the world — a wide, gently sloping beach break with a sandy bottom, warm Indian Ocean water, and consistent waves that are just the right size for learning. This 2-hour beginner lesson is designed to get you standing on a wave by the end of your very first session.

Your certified instructor starts on the beach with a short, practical theory session covering paddling, the pop-up, wave timing, and ocean safety. Then you’re in the water on a large, stable soft-top board — the safest and most forgiving equipment for first-timers. Your instructor stays with you throughout, selecting waves, correcting your technique in real time, and giving you the confidence to ride.

Groups are capped at 4 students so you get meaningful attention, not just a push and a wave goodbye. Weligama Bay is available year-round, making it one of the most accessible surf learning destinations on Sri Lanka’s southern coast. Most students are riding waves independently by the end of the session.

Story

You’ve been watching the surfers from the beach cafe for two days. It looks impossible. At 7 AM your instructor meets you on the sand. He shows you the pop-up in about three minutes, tells you the one thing to focus on when you stand, and then you’re in the water. The first two waves you go sideways. The third one, something connects. You’re up. The wave carries you all the way to the shore and you’re already turning to paddle back out before you’ve even processed it.By the end of the session you’ve caught seven waves and you’re sunburned, exhausted, and looking up lesson prices for tomorrow.
